Placement Testing

Tech Prep students preparing for college degrees need solid high school academics to obtain the full benefit of articulation agreements.  To facilitate academic readiness, the Consortium has adopted a structured approach to COMPASS placement testing and remediation including:

Testing Procedures

  • Tech Prep juniors will be COMPASS-tested by Dec.1; seniors will be tested from January through the end of March.
  • Students will be registered before they take the test. ID numbers will be assigned and results will be entered into the Cincinnati State system.  This ID number should be used whenever the student takes the COMPASS test.
  • Students may use their social security number as their test ID.
  • Seniors who take the COMPASS test must submit a Cincinnati State admission application.  The form can be found here.  On page 3 of the Cincinnati State Application for Admission Tech Prep students need to click “Yes” to “Are you currently enrolled in a Tech Prep program at your high school?”  They also need to indicate the which “track” they are in by using the drop down box.  Their credits will not transfer if they do not identify themselves as Tech Prep.
  • The COMPASS test has been modified to electronically capture student demographic information.
  • Test results will be shared with teachers and administrators.
  • A diagnostic test is an option, if the district commits to a follow-up action plan.
  • Students who test below expectations may re-test following a course of action intended to improve scores.  Permission to re-test is granted on an individual basis.
  • A transition representative will be employed in each building to facilitate testing and related communication.
