Emerging Technologies and Language Summer Academy (ETLSA)

June 29 – August 6, 2009

Cincinnati State’s Emerging Technologies and Language Summer Academies, funded by the Ohio Board of Regents and supported by both Cincinnati State and the Greater Cincinnati Tech Prep Consortium, offers unique opportunities for 11th and 12th grade students seriously interested in pursuing careers in engineering technology or the biosciences.  In addition, the Language Academy offers cultural opportunities to learn and speak Spanish. 

Students, who are selected to participate in one of these six-week Summer Academies, will have the following opportunities:

  • Take two college level courses with labs in Engineering, Bioscience or Spanish

  • Participate in a College Survival Skills/Preparatory program

  • Earn $115 per week for six weeks = $700 for active engagement and successfull completion of the program

  • Earn eight hours of college transferable credit ($800) for their work and effort

  • Gain valuable insights into their college transition from college advisors

Eligible Applicants must meet the following criteria/requirements

  • Currently be enrolled in 11th or 12th grade

  • Have teacher/counselor recommendation for this program

  • Have permission from parent/guardian, who also attends orientation session

  • Demonstrate interest in pursuing a career in these emerging technologies or interest in Spanish culture/language

  • Be progressing satisfactorily (in good standing) for high school graduation

  • Have strong record of regular school attendance and performance (2.5 GPA or higher)

  • Submit resume and essay describing their interest and background

  • Complete Summer Academy application form(s)

  • Take ACT COMPASS Placement Test on or before May 7, 2009

Admission Expectations


When admitted to participate in one of these three academies, students must agree to:

  • Agree to commit to this program full time from June 29 to August 6 in an intent form due June 1, 2009

  • Participate in a mandatory orientation program on Saturday, June 27, 2009 at Cincinnati State

  • Fully participate in all activities related to the academy and coursework

  • Actively participate in classrooms, laboratories and related meetings

  • Provide/obtain regular transportation to and from the college

  • Have their parent/guardian attend both the orientation session and final closing ceremony
